'Young' George Swinford at the Swinford Museum at Filkins

Housed in a 17th century cottage, this fine collection of local domestic, agricultural, trade and craft tools provides a unique picture of a bygone rural community.

One of Oxfordshire's oldest small rural museums, it was originally set up by George Swinford in the 1930's with the help of Sir Stafford Cripps.

We always welcome group visits whereby we offer a warm welcome, visit of the museum, short history walk of the village and a cream tea.  See button below for  2026 opening times  f and for more information on how to book a group visit.

If you are researching family who lived in Filkins, we can help with assistance from the church records which have been transcribed by Gerald Webb and Diane Blackett. A small donation is always appreciated.

Special Event for 2026

We are celebrating 90 years of the swimming pool and the bowls club.  You can learn how it all came about in 1936.  Also you can see what was dug up during the formation of the swimming pool.

The Theatre Club began 40 years ago and has put on many plays and events since then.  You will be able to see just exactly which they were.

The Museum has a considerable number of items which have been dug up in the village over the years along with Saxon artifacts.  These will be on display together with our collection of coins and tokens.

George's stonemansry tools and local stone will also be on display with the various methods of fitting the tiles on a roof.

For more information  please contact Diane Blackett on 01367 860504 or Peter Gray on 01367 860331.  Please note the museum is fully accessible.
